Details
Microsoft, founded in 1975, released its first Disaster Recovery solution, Windows Azure Hyper-V Recovery Manager, in January 2014. The product leveraged Hyper-V Replica to replicate the data from one on-premises data center to another on-premises data center and could orchestrate a failover. Already in June 2014 the name was changed to Azure Site Recovery (ASR) in order to reflect the broader scope of the product. This preview version provided failover support of Hyper-V VMs to the Microsoft Azure public cloud. In October 2014 ASR went GA (Generally Available).
In July 2015 ASR added protection support for VMware vSphere and Physical (Bare Metal) Servers. Finally support for protection of Azure IaaS VMs was introduced in June 2018.
Customer install base and number of employees working on ASR are unknown at this time.
