VMware was founded in 1998 and began to ship its first BC/DR solution, vCenter Site Recovery Manager, in 2008. SRM was designed to exclusively support VMware environments. The initial SRM release, version 1.0, offered VMware ESXi 3.0 support. In 2015 vCenter Site Recovery Manager was rebranded to Site Recovery Manager. The release of SRM 8.1 in 2018 introduced support for VMware Cloud on AWS support.

The worldwide customer install base for VMware SRM is unknown.
